BMC seeks Sachin Tendulkar’s help to tackle waste
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appealed to master blaster Sachin Tendulkar to lend a helping hand in its attempts to tackle the garbage problem in the city. His support will enhance our efforts to carry out its task effectively, said the civic body.
Mr Tendulkar, a former Indian captain and member of the Rajya Sabha, had written a letter to the BMC commissioner requesting for urgent intervention into problems at Shivaji Nagar and several issues plaguing the Deonar dumping ground.
In its reply to him, municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta has requested him to support the civic body in its public awareness drives in solid management waste. “Though the BMC is working tirelessly to solve the garbage problem in the city, the support of citizens and public awareness is also very crucial in this task. On this backdrop, if a well-known public figure come out actively to support the BMC’s efforts, it can be implemented effectively,” said Mr Mehta.
In a three-page detailed reply sent to Mr Tendulkar, the civic chief has said that after the recent fire at Deonar dumping ground several steps have been taken like constructing a boundary wall, internal roads and other security measures such as installation of CCTV cameras.
The BMC has also planned to set up waste to energy plants at its dumping grounds. The steps taken for segregation of waste include setting up around 32 segregation centres and an additional 35 centres are also in the pipeline.”
The letter to the cricket legend also mentions several citizen amenities provided by the BMC at Shivaji Nagar such as BMC toilets and schools.
There are 105 public toilets with 1957 seats and the civic body is also planning to increase the seats further by 326. There are around 30,000 children who are studying in the schools.
