BMC’s lofty promise: No potholes in Mumbai on Monday

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s new deadline for fixing potholes in the city is October 17. Its earlier self-imposed deadline was October 25, which has been advanced by eight days. It had earlier missed two deadlines this month.

While the BMC has stopped counting its potholes, it is confident it will be able to fix the number of potholes within two days. Officials from the roads department also stated that the annual roadwork on over 1,000 roads, supposed to start on October 1, would start by this month-end.

However, the civic roads department will also have to repair potholes under the defect liability period. These roads ideally have to be repaired by the contractors in-charge of road repairs. However, municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta has directed his staff to undertake these pothole repairs as well. The money used for their repairs will then be reimbursed from the contractor.

Meanwhile, the civic body has already missed its scheduled date for annual road repair works by a fortnight, which the officials attributed to constant rainfall.

Every year the road repair work is taken up by October 1. An official said the annual road repair work would begin on 100 roads by Monday, out of a total 1,004 roads. It will take up repair work on an additional 200 roads by the end of this month. Work on all roads will be completed by the end of May 2017.
