BMC to repair Nepean Sea flyover

The Priyadarshini flyover at Nepean Sea Road, one of the major flyovers in South Mumbai, will soon be restored by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at the cost of Rs 3.78 crore.

The Priyadarshini flyover at Nepean Sea Road, one of the major flyovers in South Mumbai, will soon be restored by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at the cost of Rs 3.78 crore. The flyover is heavily damaged and needs urgent repairs, said civic officials.

According to them, it is an important structure connecting several places like the Petit Hall, Mount Pleasant Road, Nepean Road, Manav Mandir Road and Walkeshwar Road. Built by state’spublic works department about 40-45 years ago, the cement concrete (CC) bridge experiences heavy traffic. The structure has cracked in several places due to which the iron rods in its framework have corroded.

The BMC had appointed M/s Pentacle Consultants as technical consultants to suggest measures for repairing the flyover. According to their report, the bridge bearings have failed due to dislocation and bending. In addition to this, the expansion joints have also been damaged.

For the project, the BMC has received three bids, of which M/s Ten Constructions (India) bagged the contract with a bid of Rs 3.78 crore. The proposal will be tabled before the civic standing committee meeting for approval on Wednesday.

However, the BMC has no plans to remove illegal slum dwellers living on its pavement. A senior civic official said, “Removal of encroachments comes under the ward office purview and it won’t be an obstacle in the project.”
