Continuing its drive against unauthorised hawkers in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday removed more than 70 illegal food stall vendors in Central Mumbai areas. The action was taken against those who were found cooking on footpaths.

Illegal food stalls in areas like Dadar, Worli and Haji Ali were removed during the demolition drive. In G-North ward, action was taken against stalls located at Shivaji Park, Dadar railway station, Senapti Bapat Marg and Kakasaheb Gadgil Marg areas. The other areas, where action was undertaken were at Haji Ali and Dr Annie Besant Road in Worli. The seized goods were immediately crushed using JCBs, said civic officials.

According to civic officials, the drive was part of the BMC’s action against illegal hawkers in the city. Ever since taking over the reigns as municipal commissioner, Ajoy Mehta has intensified the drive against illegal hawkers and constructions across the city. He has asked the respective ward offices to seek assistance of civic engineers from other departments too in this regard. He has also directed assistant commissioners to provide them adequate manpower during the drive.

G-South ward’s assistant municipal commis-sioner Bhagyashree Kapse said that the action would continue in the coming days as well. “There were around 40 hawkers against whom action was taken while others were some temporary structures,” she said.

Dayashankar Singh from the Azad Hawker’s Union said, “We have moved to the Supreme Court asking to allow food stall vendors to cook on streets. Without cooking, vendors won’t be able to serve fresh food to their customers.”
