After massive demolitions were carried out by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in B and M East wards earlier this month, it is now L ward’s turn to face the pan-Mumbai encroachment demolition drive launched by the civic body.
On Friday, Lal Bahadur Shastri Road in Kurla saw nearly 80 illegal shops being demolished by L ward officials, of which about 30 were makeshift stalls and the remaining 50 were street-side shops. The L ward demolition drive will be carried out in two phases and will continue next week, said assistant commissioner, L ward, Ajaykumar Ambi. The demolition is being carried out by a team of 34 BMC officials along with 20 police officials for protection, on the direction of deputy municipal commissioner of zone 5, Bharat Marathe.
Following directions by municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta in the recent monthly review meeting held with assistant commissioners from all 24 wards, ward officials have geared into action to identify illegal commercial structures on footpaths and along the streets of Mumbai and take action against them. The decision has been taken in a bid to unclog streets and make the pedestrian commute easier and safer, sources in BMC said.
Friday’s demolition drive in L ward has, by far, been the largest this month.
