In addition to desilting Mumbai’s nullahs, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also started demolition drives of all illegal encroachments housed on the banks of nullahs in the city, which might possibly prevent water from flowing into the nullahs during the monsoon.
As part of this drive, the civic body demolished 37 illegal structures situated on the banks of the Chamadawadi nullah in Bandra (east) within the past week. Among these structures 27 were demolished on Monday during a massive demolition drive carried out in the H (east) ward. The other 10 were demolished last week, as part of the same drive.
Sources in the BMC said that these structures would possibly get in the way of the flow of nullah water, especially during the monsoons. Following the constant criticism faced by the civic body regarding the city’s monsoon preparedness, the BMC wants to leave no stone unturned this monsoon, which might lead to chocking of nullahs and flooding of the vicinity.
Owing to reports of incidents where civic official who were part of a demolition drive were beaten up by local residents and political party workers, several police officials from the nearby police stations were present at the spot, to provide protection.
