BMC proposes to transfer waste from west to east
Despite stiff opposition from corporators of the eastern suburbs, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has again come up with a proposal of transferring waste from the western suburbs to dumping grounds that are all in city’s eastern region.
The civic body has tabled a proposal to transfer waste in western suburbs like Malad (P/South ward), Goregaon (P/N) and Andheri west (K/W) from the Versova lagoon transfer cell to the dumping grounds in Mulund, Deonar and Kanjurmarg for a period of two years. The proposal will be discussed in the civic standing committee meeting to be held on Tuesday. A few days ago, corporators from the eastern suburbs had vehemently opposed a proposal to transfer waste in western suburbs like Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar from the Gorai transfer cell to the dumping grounds in Mulund, Deonar and Kanjurmarg.
According to civic officials, around 400 metric tonnes of garbage is dumped daily at Versova, which will be directly transferred to Deonar, Mulund or Kanjurmarg dumping grounds with the help of closed body tippers and excavators.
BMC has allotted the work to M/s Anshram and company, for which it will spend Rs 10.88 crore for the transfer of 400 MT of waste for next two years. “Residents of eastern suburbs are facing health problems due to the foul smell and air pollution from dumping grounds. Instead of the proposed plan, BMC should set up regional waste treatment plants to process garbage on the spot,” said Congress corporator Pravin Chheda.
