Along with its plans to create additional parking for cars in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also plans to create a parking authority to identify parking spaces for bicycles in the city. Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta made this announcement on Sunday.

On the occasion of ‘cycle to work’ event organised to mark World Environment Day, Mehta said, “We are working on a parking authority for Mumbai which looks at parking not just for cars, but for cycles also. It will create an environment for people to cycle to work.”

While Mumbai is facing problems of pollution and traffic, the BMC is looking at ways to promote use of bicycles on the city’s streets.

Mr Mehta further said, “Cycling is the only activity, which benefits the cyclist as well as his environment. We need a people’s movement for cycling in the city.”

Feroza Suresh from Smart Commute Foundation, who was also present at the event confirmed that a monthly ‘critical mass’ event on the last Friday of every month will be started in the city in June itself. Critical mass event is a regular event in many major cities across the world, where citizens take cycle rides together t o promote cycling.
