You can now win prizes by carrying out segregation of dry and wet waste on your society premises. To encourage the segregation of waste, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to hold a contest among housing societies across the city.

According to the civic officials, some of the housing societies and commercial complexes in the city have already started the exercise of waste segregation in their premises. To promote the message further, a competition has been planned in this regard.

“There are some societies in Lower Parel like Marathon, which are successfully implementing the segregation of waste. We want other societies in the city to emulate them. For this, a contest among housing societies has been planned. The winners will be awarded with cash prizes. The modalities of the contest are being worked out and it is expected to start in a couple of months,” said Siraj Ansari, chief engineer (solid waste management).

To ensure segregation of waste, the civic body has set up 32 segregation centres across the city, in which about 1,200 metric tonnes of waste is processed.

In addition to this, 35 more centres are also in the pipeline, which are expected to process around 1,500 MT of waste.

The civic body will distribute dustbins to about three lakh households in the city of 10-litre capacity each to promote segregation of dry and wet waste.

The civic body has also planned to take help from advanced locality management (ALM) groups to promote the waste segregation. It has appealed to all the ALMs in 24 wards to avail of the dry waste collection vehicle facility.

The list of dry waste collection routes of all 24 wards is published on the municipal website. The ALMs have been asked to inform their members to avail the services of these dry waste collection vehicles on the day, time and routes specified for their respective wards.

The dormant ALM groups can also avail this facility after registering their ALM with the concerned assistant commissioner (Ward), said civic officials.
