There is a discontent brewing among the engineers of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over the arrest of two top civic engineers in the road repairs scam. To protest the arrests, they will hold demonstrations against the civic administration opposite municipal headquarters on Monday.
Two senior civic officials, Ashok Pawar (chief engineer, building and maintenance) and Uday Murudkar (chief engineer, vigilance), have been arrested for their alleged complicity in the road repairs scam. Both have been remanded in police custody by the court till July 11.
However, leaders of engineers union in the BMC have alleged that both the civic engineers have been made scapegoats over the issue.
“Instead of taking action against top civic officials, the engineers are being targeted because they are soft targets. Both these municipal engineers have been held guilty without any proper inquiry. To protest their arrests, all the civic engineers will gather at civic headquarters on Monday July 11 and hold demonstrations,” said Sainath Rajadhyaksha, general secretary of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Engineers Union (BMEU).
At several times, civic engineers work beyond working hours just to ensure that civic works are completed on time. However, henceforth we would work only according to the rules. From now on there will be no work after 6 pm. If civic administration does not heed to our grievances, we are even planning to hold stop-work agitation, he added.
The engineers from Mhada have also supported the protest of BMC engineers. “If necessary, we would also participate in the protests of BMC engineers,” said one of the Mhada engineers.
