BMC may lift 15 per cent water cuts

A year after the civic body imposed a 15 per cent water cut throughout Mumbai, civic officials have confirmed that it would soon take a decision about lifting the cut by next week. Stating that the water levels in the seven lakes of Mumbai had now reached a “satisfactory” level, sources in the civic body said the Brihanmmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is considering lifting the water cut.

Addressing the standing committee on Wednesday, additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said, “The BMC is likely to withdraw the present 15 per cent water cut, after deliberation, by next week. It wants to take stock of the situation of rainfall in the catchment area for another week before taking a stand on the continuation of water cut. Currently, the city stands at a comfortable position regarding availability of water in the lakes.”

However, Mr Mukherjee did not confirm whether the cut imposed on commercial and industrial establishments along with residential connections would also be reconsidered. In October last year, the civic body imposed a 20 per cent water cut in water supply to residential properties and 50 per cent cut on commercial establishments. This decision was taken following the scarcity of water in the city, which was to last Mumbai for 304 days from October last year.
