BMC to maintain public toilets all over Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to take over the maintenance of all public toilets in the city by providing services like electricity, cleanliness, plumbing services etc.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to take over the maintenance of all public toilets in the city by providing services like electricity, cleanliness, plumbing services etc.

There are 8,417 public toilets in the city with 79,758 units across the city, which belong to various agencies like the BMC, the state government, Centre etc. “It has been found that several public toilets are not used due to lack of electricity, apart from other amenities. Especially women and children do not prefer to use public toilets during the nighttime. In addition to this, there were also problems like maintenance, plumbing services, cleanliness, among others, at these toilets. The civic body had received lot of demands from various quarters to provide these amenities on its own,” said a senior civic official.

Taking this into account, civic chief Ajoy Mehta has directed all deputy and assistant commissioners to provide power supply and cleanliness at all public toilets in the city. He has also directed them to prepare guidelines about public toilets in this regard.

The BMC has also decided to construct more toilets for women in the city, said civic officials.
