After failing to get a response from contractors, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to increase the contract period from six months to two years to run public parking lots in the city. The civic body wants to appoint contractors for 29 amenity parking lots in the city.
The BMC under Development Control Rules (DCR) 33(24) has sanctioned 61 proposals of public parking lots. The DCR clause deals with the development of multi-storey public parking lots (PPL) on private plots in lieu of additional incentive floor space index (FSI).
As per the scheme, the permissible incentive FSI is 0.5, if PPL is within 500m area of important locations such as railway stations, ST depot, government and semi-government offices, religious and tourist places and 0.4 in other cases, subject to a maximum FSI cap of 4 in Island City and 3 in suburbs.
According to the civic officials, nine parking lots — containing 4264 parking spaces — have been handed over to the BMC by developers under this scheme so far. Of them, the parking lots at Apollo Mill and Altamount Road have already been commissioned for public use, but they are managed by ward offices.
The civic body has decided to appoint contractors to run 29 amenity parking lots — four are from island city, 16 western suburbs and nine from eastern suburbs. The land reserved for parking lots have been developed and handed over to the respective ward offices.
“Tenders were invited thrice to run these amenity parking lots for a period of six months. However, not a single contractor responded to it. In a pre-bid meeting, the interested bidders requested to relax the tender terms and conditions saying that contract period mentioned is too short. Taking note of their grievances, we have changed the tender conditions by increasing the contract period from six months to two years,” said a senior civic official.
As per the civic data, there are presently 92 parking lots in the city, of which 47 are in South Mumbai. There is only one parking lot for every 120 vehicles in the city.
