With two more months of monsoon left, the lakes that supply water to the city have already recorded 10,31,680 million litres (ML) of water, as opposed to 8,34,992 million litres of water available this time last year.
However, the lakes need to have about 14 lakh ML of water as of September 30 to ensure that the city gets water supply throughout the year without any cuts.
While the city faced two tough years when the water content in the lakes did not even touch the minimum required level, officials of the hydraulics department are hopeful that this year will be different.
As the total useful content at the end of September 2015 was 11,45,001 ML of water, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had imposed a 15-per cent water cut throughout the city until July, 2016. Similarly, the total useful content at the end of September in 2014 was 13,97,831 ML. However, officials are confident that the BMC will not have to re-impose the water cut this year if Mumbai’s catchment areas continue to receive heavy rainfall, as is the present status.
Meanwhile, Vihar Lake, which supplies about 90 ML of water per day to Mumbai out of its daily need of 3,750 ML of water, began to overflow on Monday morning.
A civic official said, “We are in a better position this year, although we must wait and watch.”
