Accordingly, priority will be given to repairing roads with low gradation. Roads under the Defect Liability Period (DLP) too will be repaired by the civic body which will later collect repair costs from contractors.
Civic chief Ajoy Mehta made a statement in the civic standing committee that due to uncertainty about the number of potholes, BMC had decided to go in for gradation of roads.
Accordingly, roads would be classified into four categories depending on their riding quality as per Indian Road Congress (IRC) parameters. Roads that fall in the lowest category i.e. are most unsuitable for driving, will be repaired on a priority basis. Measures will also be taken to improve the riding quality of roads.
Mr Mehta accepted that contractors were not carrying out pothole-filling works even on roads, which fell under DLP. “BMC will fill potholes on roads within the DLP period and collect repair costs from the contractor,” he said.
The municipal commissioner also announced that BMC planned to have a Unique Identification Number (UID) for every contractor so that his earlier history was available with the civic body while awarding road works. “For roads to be in better condition, the trenching works need to be carried out properly. For this, there should be good coordination with utilities,” he added.
