To prevent fire incidents at Deonar dumping ground, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to adopt several measures like construction of compound wall, deployment of fire brigade’s quick response team and installation of CCTV cameras and watchtowers at the dump yard.

Civic chief Ajoy Mehta said that the BMC has also decided to appoint a consultant to suggest measures for scientific processing of garbage at Deonar dumping ground.

Modern facilities such as compound wall, lighting, CCTV cameras, higher security, motorable roads will also be provided at the dump yard, he added.

The issue of fire at Deonar dumping ground was discussed at the civic general body meeting on Thursday. Making a statement on it, Mr Mehta said that the fire is yet to be completely extinguished. “The fire brigade officials have been continuously working since the fire broke out to bring it under control. We have formed an enquiry committee to investigate into the cause of fire,” he added.

Speaking on the issue, Congress corporator Pravin Chheda alleged that the BMC is turning a blind eye towards the garbage problem at Deonar dumping ground, as it is not a posh area.

He said, “There is a 164-foot high mountain of garbage lying at the Deonar dump yard. This is causing a lot of health problems to residents in surrounding areas. But BMC has not found a solution on this as only poor people are living there.”

Opposition party leader Devendra Amberkar slammed Mumbai mayor Snehal Ambekar and Shiv Sena leaders for being “apathetic” towards citizens’ problems.

“Even as the citizens were suffering from health hazards due to dense smoke resulting from the fire, the mayor was enjoying a ‘study tour’ at the Andamans,” he said.

Samajwadi Party group leader Rais Shaikh alleged that fire officials shirked from their responsibility of dousing fire at the dumping ground. “When I called the chief fire officer to inform him about the fire, he told me it should be controlled by the dumping ground authorities,” he said.
