BMC boards with parking details to curb extortion

DCP Zone One Ravindra Shisve wants BMC to put up huge boards with details about parking rates, if any, at particular spots, to curb random charges recovered by parking attendants.

DCP Zone One Ravindra Shisve wants BMC to put up huge boards with details about parking rates, if any, at particular spots, to curb random charges recovered by parking attendants.

There are 47 parking sites in south Mumbai, of which eight belong to contractors and 27 are free parking zones. From Wednesday, 12 out of these 27 will actually become free parking as hitherto, money was being extorted by misguiding people that parking rates did in fact exist for these areas.

The police submitted their version to BMC where they explained, “Those parking sites handled by MCGM have deployed staff to collect fees from people who park their cars. Although after the contract period of any site is completed, it is supposed to be free for the public to park their vehicles there. In such areas, BMC should put up huge boards mentioning ‘free parking’ otherwise those engaged in collecting parking charges deface small boards indicating ‘free parking’ so people don’t get the idea.”

“Sites like Horiman Circle, S.A. Brelvi road, Vinay K. Shah Marg, Hutatma Chowk, Jehangir Art Gallery are most crowded pay and park roads and anti-social elements here are illegally extorting money from people, charging fees as per their whims and fancies. Four FIRs have been registered against these people. To stop this completely, we need to create awareness by putting up big boards that mention parking fees according to number of hours and nearby police stations to complain if anyone extorts money,” said the DCP.
