The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started an intensive voter registration drive, in preparation for the upcoming civic polls. This drive will last till October 14. Meanwhile, the BMC is planning to restructure the city’s wards and has urged all Mumbaikars to check for their names in the fresh voters’ list.

Additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh said, “There is a possibility that names from the voters’ list has been taken off, if the voter has shifted from one locality to another, or has changed his address. Enrolled voters must also check if their names are available.”

Mr Deshmukh said the BMC was yet to decide on restructuring of the wards. He refused to confirm if the wards with SC and ST reservations will increase this year.

“We are roughly maintaining the population per electoral ward at 54,000. There is scope for an increase or decrease of about 10 per cent to that limit.”

The civic body also plans to use natural boundaries such as railway tracks, and nullahs to demarcate ward boundaries.

To ensure participation from women of the reserved categories, a further 50 per cent reservation has been made to represent SC, ST and OBC women. The BMC will release the final list of ward boundaries, reservations, and approximate population of each ward on November 22, after the election commission approves the list.
