In a move, which is likely to solve power problems in eastern suburbs, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has given its nod to M/s Tata Power to construct a 400 kilovolt (kv) power receiving station at Ghatkopar (east).
According to the civic officials, the Tata Power has started commissioning of a power transmission infrastructure project considering that Mumbai is likely to face a shortage
of 1948 kv power by 2015. The project has been approved by the state transmission utility (STU), Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) and the state government and is likely to be completed within 36 to 42 months. As part of this, a 400 kv gas insulated switchgear and
control building is need to be constructed at Ghatkopar.“The BMC has already allotted a 3,100 sqm plot at Ghatkopar (east) to M/s Tata Power to set up a power sub station on a lease of 60 years since 1992. We have renewed the lease and also given them an approval to construct a power receiving station. It will be helpful in improving the power supply in the eastern suburbs,” said Prakash Gangadhare, chairman of BMC improvements committee.
The plot, which was earlier reserved for ‘sewage treatment’ in DP 1991, has now been free of any reservations as per the proposed DP 2034. The land also comes under coastal regulation zone (CRZ) rules, according to which the plot will be developed for constructing a power receiving station, said the civic officials.
