The statement of a woman who claimed that Bharatiya Janata Party’s youth wing, Yuva Morcha’s Mumbai unit president, Ganesh Pandey, had molested her earlier this month, was registered at the Versova police station.
Thereafter, an FIR was registered against Mr Pandey under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC at the Versova police station.
An FIR was also registered against some other men who were present in the room when the woman was allegedly molested. The incident occurred on March 4 on the sidelines of a three-day executive committee meeting in Mathura, where the woman was rehearsing for a performance to be held the next day. The woman in her complaint said that Pandey not only molested her but messaged her several times in a bad tone.
Versova police station officials refused to comment on the matter despite several attempts by this newspaper. The complainant had also written a letter to BJP leader Ashish Shelar alleging that Pandey cracked cheap jokes on her. Following the incident, the Mumbai unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP, was dissolved on Friday. According to reports, after the meeting in Mathura, Pandey called the complainant to his room over phone and tried to hold her hand in front of his friends, while cracking vulgar jokes on her. Later, the woman informed BJP authorities but the police was not informed.
On Wednesday, she went to the Versova police station and met ACP Arun Chavhan, after which an FIR registration process was started under sections of IPC for molestation.
An official informed The Asian Age that after registering the complaint, they will take a statement of Pandey as well and the local court will be informed about it, and action will be taken only after the court order.
