BJP-Shiv Sena clash over ‘corruption’

The Shiv Sena MLAs were at the loggerheads with the government over the issue of alleged corruption in the Mumbai District Central Co-operative Bank.

The Shiv Sena MLAs were at the loggerheads with the government over the issue of alleged corruption in the Mumbai District Central Co-operative Bank.

Though the Shiv Sena members aggressively demanded arrest of persons against whom a case has already been registered, co-operative minister Chandrakant Patil maintained that any action against bank officials would be taken only after going through the reports of auditor and NABARD.

Former MNS MLA Pravin Darekar is the chairman of Mumbai DCC, which is the apex bank of all cooperative societies in Mumbai, and he joined the BJP after losing in last year’s Assembly election.

Shiv Sena MLA Prakash Surve had raised the issue of allegations of irregularities in the bank. He pointed out that the auditor’s report has revealed corruption in the bank and sought to know what steps have been taken by the government on the auditor’s report.

The co-operative minister admitted receiving the auditor’s report which has concluded that Rs 278.06 crore transactions carried out by the bank were improper. “We have also received the NABARD report only recently. Appropriate action will be taken in the case only after going through both the reports,” he said.

However, the Shiv Sena MLAs were not satisfied with the minister’s answer. Another Shiv Sena MLA Prakash Surve pointed out that an FIR has already been registered against bank officials, but no arrest has been made. “The accused are roaming freely even after a case has been registered in the case. When is the government going to arrest these people ” he asked.

One of the allegations against the bank that it invested Rs 110 crore in Madhya Pradesh Industrial development corporation which was already riddled with an alleged fraud of Rs 174 crore.
