BJP MP Kirit Somaiya has accused Central Railway (CR) general manager Sunil Kumar Sood of misconduct during the first panel meeting of the committee, which has been formed as per railway minister Suresh Prabhu’s directives.
The MP, in his letter (a copy of which is with this newspaper), has said that Mr Sood showed “apathy towards MPs, the railway minister and commuters,’ who were present at the meeting on December 6 on CST premises.
When contacted, Mr Somaiya said that when asked for statistics about the number of deaths, Mr Sood replied saying, “Kya main unn mare hue aadmiyo ko poochu ke woh kaise mare ” (Should I go and ask the people who died about how they died ).
“He had no regard for what all of us had got together for. He was speaking to us as if we have no working knowledge of the railways and was extremely rude in his reply to our suggestions,” said Mr Somaiya.
Mr Somaiya and other members were visibly disturbed after the meeting which continued till late evening but only the former made his displeasure official via the letter. “We had not gathered there just like that, the panel was set up by Mr Sood’s boss. When we told Mr Sood that 15-coach trains should be looked at, he used words like ‘absurd’. We were completely shocked with the way he was speaking,” said Mr Somaiya.
When contacted, Mr Sood said he wouldn’t be able to comment on the letter as he had himself not read it yet. “I have not read the letter so how can I comment ” he said.
Mr Somaiya has said that he will be taking up the matter with the railway minister over the phone as well.
