Bizmen should know Marathi: Vinod Tawde

Human Resources Development (HRD) minister Vinod Tawde on Monday stressed that every person doing business in Maharashtra should know the Marathi language.

Human Resources Development (HRD) minister Vinod Tawde on Monday stressed that every person doing business in Maharashtra should know the Marathi language. He advocated the use of Marathi for telemarketing in call centres and said that the BJP government was considering providing education in law in Marathi as an option to that in English.

Mr Tawde was speaking at the launch of Marathi Vishwakosh Volume 20 (Purvardha) at the hands of Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.

“Translating nameplates and boards of shops and establishments in the Marathi language will not be enough for its proliferation. The person working in the establishment should be aware of the language,” said Mr Tawde in his address.

Pointing at the increasing use of Marathi, he said call centres too should use Marathi for telemarketing purposes in the state. By doing this, they would obviously benefit as out of 12 crore people in the state, more than nine crore speak Marathi.

Mr Tawde said that his government was trying to provide law education in Marathi as proceedings of lower courts should be in the local language. “This can be done only if advocates are given an option of completing their practice in the Marathi language,” the minister said. He added that he had been following up on the matter with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Bombay high court and was hopeful of a positive outcome.

The government was making all efforts to impart the status of a classic language to Marathi, he said, adding that the state language needed to be transformed into a language of knowledge and the government was trying for the same.
