The Bombay high court on Wednesday rejected an intervention application filed by 2002 Gujarat riots’ victim, Bilkis Bano, in the appeal filed by the state and convicts in connection with the case where she was allegedly gang raped and her relatives murdered.

The division bench of Justice V.K. Tahilramani and Justice Mridula Bhatkar ruled that the application could not be allowed under the Criminal Procedure Code however as the court was inclined to hear Bilkis, she may convert her application into an appeal.

However, the bench made it clear that in her appeal, Bilkis could not challenge the life sentence awarded to the 11 convicts (to seek bigger punishment) in the case by the trial court and could only challenge acquittal of five personnel of Gujarat Police.
