Bikers waylay jeweller, make away with Rs 2 crore worth of loot

A jewellery shop owner was looted of gold jewellery worth almost Rs 2 crore when he was travelling in a taxi to CST.

A jewellery shop owner was looted of gold jewellery worth almost Rs 2 crore when he was travelling in a taxi to CST. The victim had hailed a cab from Abdul Rehman Street near Kalbadevi with his nephew and an employee, when four bikers allegedly followed the cab and along with the cabbie, snatched their jewellery bag. The Pydhonie police is on the lookout for all five, including the cab driver.

The incident occurred late Saturday night when the complainant identified as Mukesh Sanghvi (46) with two more people hailed a cab to go to CST. Mr Sanghvi, who was carrying gold jewellery weighing 6,569 grams, kept the jewellery-laden bag in the cab’s boot.

“After they went some distance, the cab driver stopped the taxi at a public washroom near Carnak Bridge close to Masjid Bunder railway station. He told the complainant that he wanted to use the toilet and asked them to get off the cab. When the passengers refused, he started arguing with them,” said an officer from Pydhonie police station, which is investigating the case. He added that while the argument ensued, four people on two motorbikes reached the cab and snatched the gold chain that Mr Sanghvi was wearing.

“The passengers asked the cab driver to follow them but lost them. Soon, the two bikes were seen following them. The cabbie brought the taxi to a sudden halt and the bikers and the driver pushed the passengers out. They then opened the boot and fled with the bag of jewellery,” said an officer.
