Bhumata Brigade activists led by Trupti Desai on Wednesday took darshan of Goddess Ambabai at the famed Kolhapur temple amidst police security.
Kolhapur Collector, Amit Saini, told The Asian Age, “Ms Desai was earlier detained when she sought to stage a rally but released when she stated she wanted to take darshan. We complied with the same under police cordon.”
Despite tight police bandobast, there was some manhandling and throwing of red ink on Ms Desai and her activists after they took darshan at 8.30 pm, according to the activists. The Kolhapur Temple trustees had decided to open up the sanctum to women following the example of Shani Shingnapur in Ahmednagar.
However, some organisations were opposed to the entry and converged near the temple to express their displeasure. The add to this, the temple authorities took objection to the “dress code”.
