Senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal met MNS chief Raj Thackeray on Sunday afternoon at the latter’s residence, creating a flutter in the political circles. However, Mr Bhujbal put all speculation to rest when he clarified that the visit was to meet Mr Thackeray’s mother who was injured in a slab collapse accident at her home.
Sources said the meeting was important as the state will soon start its Winter Session of legislature Monday onwards in Nagpur. Mr Bhujbal was in the news recently after the government sanctioned his prosecution in a corruption case.
However, Mr Bhujbal, speaking to reporters after the meeting said that the meeting was apolitical. He also added that he had very old ties with the Thackeray family.
“It was not a political meeting. Raj Thackeray’s mother had fractured her hand and injured her back. My wife and my ties with the family are old, and so I went to meet her,” Mr Bhujbal told reporters.
He also said that the women in both the families meet occasionally and even go out together. “Every year, the ladies of the house meet outside and go on religious tours. After my wife came to know about the incident, she said she wanted to meet Raj’s mother. So, I took my wife and went to meet Kunda tai (Raj’s mother),” he added.
To a query about the discussion held between the two, Mr Bhujbal said it was about Dr Ambedkar whose death anniversary was observed on Sunday by lakhs of people. “We spoke about Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s programme at Chaityabhoomi today and the crowd that had come to pay respects to him. He is one person who has done so much for the poor and the downtrodden that they can never forget him,” he said.
