Committee members of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport (BEST) have raised the issue of its power consumers in the island city migrating to Tata Power Company (TPC), as result of which it was decided that a sub-committee be formed to halt this shift.

BEST committee member Ravi Raja claimed that they have been losing its high-end consumers like commercial hotels and big complexes to TPC. ITC Hotel and Global Hospital at Parel have already shifted to TPC and future projects by Shapoorji Pallonji have applied for the same.

Mr Raja said, “ITC and Global have already gone to TPC. Among the reasons for the shift is that our power department has not been giving them any kind of incentive to stay back with us. We have told these high-end consumers to get around 3,000 sq metre of land to build sub-stations in areas like Parel where land prices are very high, while TPC has asked for almost half of that,” he said.

Mr Raja found support from other members like Shivjit Singh who said that the BEST is to be held accountable for the migration.

“Congress member Singh held the BEST administration responsible for the power consumers’ migration to TPC. BEST is unable to provide good services to its consumers. In fact, for a new connection consumers are forced to come down to the office countless number of times, while TPC has put out a red carpet for anyone who wants to switch to them,” he said.

BEST chairman Arvind Dudhwadkar backed the motion of Mr Raja to form a committee and passed the motion for the same. Tata Power is cheaper than the BEST and Reliance Infra.
