After the Unesco submitted the first report on design strategy for Bandra station, the Railways has embarked on a mission to give a major facelift to ‘Queen of Suburbs’ as a model heritage landmark in Mumbai. The Railways on Wednesday said that a comprehensive management plan for Bandra is being worked out in collaboration with the Unesco.

The Railways stated that the Unesco would submit the final report for Bandra station next month, which would help in preservation of the rich heritage of Mumbai. “Railways has initiated a comprehensive proposal in collaboration with Unesco to revamp Bandra suburban station with a view to not only transform this station into an efficient transportation hub but also to reinforce its status as a heritage landmark. This would be in line with Bandra precinct’s highly cultural and cosmopolitan character,” the ministry of railways said on Wednesday.

As part of an agreement between Railways and Unesco, a comprehensive management plan is being prepared for Bandra station which is hailed as the “Queen of the Suburbs” of Mumbai. Bandra is home to some of the oldest religious shrines, a Portuguese fort, film studios, East Indian Christian settlements, Anglo-Indian bakeries and art galleries. “This station epitomises and exemplifies heritage and has been recognised as a Grade-I heritage property with an excellent blend of Victorian Gothic and the vernacular style of architecture,” said a senior official in the ministry of railways.

The Unesco has submitted first report focusing on “urban design” strategy with an action plan for improvements in the circulating area of Bandra suburban railway station to railway minister Suresh Prabhu. “This report proposes to develop a high quality and culturally relevant public realm, a diverse and vibrant space as well as a community asset. Priority will be given to the pedestrians and universal access while creating an attractive and comfortable environment,” added the official.
