A sessions court in Kalyan in neighbouring Mumbai has recently refused to grant bail to two persons who were arrested for allegedly killing a cable operator in Ulhasnagar. The court refused to grant bail to the accused, observing that the co-accused in the case were arrested on the basis of CCTV footage and the investigation in the case was still in progress.

The prosecution case is that Sachanand alias Bachhu Karira, a cable operator in Ulhasnagar, was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne assailants. The prosecusion said Karira was allegedly killed at the instance of gangster Suresh Pujari, as the deceased had refused to give Rs 5 crore in extortion money.

The incident took place on September 11, 2015, at around 3.30 pm when two persons had come on motorcycle and opened firing on Karira. The police had arrested the assailants on the basis of CCTV footage and the applicants Pravin Patil and Prashant Sapkal were arrested during investigation after the police found that their bank accounts were used to transfer money for the execution of murder.

The applicants had filed the bail pleas on the ground they are innocent and had been falsely implicated in the case. Their lawyer had contended before the court they are farmers from the Sangli district and there is no evidence against them and no specific role is attributed to any of them except that some money was allegedly transferred from Pujari to their bank account for paying the hirelings. It was also claimed the investigating officer did not collect details of money transaction to prove their involvement.
