A sessions court in Mumbai on Thursday rejected bail applications filed by seven accused arrested in connection with suburban Malwani hooch tragedy in which more than 100 people had died.
A sessions court in Mumbai on Thursday rejected bail applications filed by seven accused arrested in connection with suburban Malwani hooch tragedy in which more than 100 people had died.
The applicants were either suppliers or sellers of illegal liquor and had contended before the court that since they did not manufacture the liquor, there is no case against them and hence they should be granted bail.
Special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat opposed the bail plea saying there is a chain of conspiracy and if these accused are removed from the chain then it would be difficult to prove the case against anybody.
He also contended that the accused had knowledge that the liquor was poisonous and was dangerous for human beings but they still indulged in the business so there is a prima facie case against them.
Mr Gharat also argued that this tragedy would not have happened had these accused not played their role so they should not be granted bail. He requested the court to reject the bail application. After hearing arguments the court rejected bail pleas.
More than 100 people had died after consuming illegal liquor in Malwani, Malad in June last year. Eight policemen from Malwani police station and four excise officials have also been suspended after the incident.
