On Tuesday, the state legislative assembly was adjourned twice amid acrimonious scenes between the ruling BJP and opposition NCP over a BJP MLA’s claim on Monday that a NCP legislator had insulted the national flag.

BJP MLA Ashish Shelar, had on Monday, raised the issue alleging that NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad insulted the tricolour by rubbing his face with it. “I have seen a video clip which shows the tricolour being insulted by the NCP MLA. It is being carried like a bag, and looks as if someone has wiped his face with it,” Mr Shelar had said on Monday. He had added that the clip was shot when opposition MLAs were speaking on the issue of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’ “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” remarks.

On Tuesday, an irked opposition shouted slogans and created a ruckus in the lower House, leading the House to be adjourned for 10 minutes. It was again adjourned for half-an-hour as noisy scenes continued.

Assembly speaker, Haribhau Bagde, had on Monday, said that he would give a ruling on Tuesday over the alleged insult to the national flag by the opposition legislator. He had asked legislators to be extra cautious while handling the national flag. “I will examine the clip and give the ruling on the issue tomorrow,” he had said.
