Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar on Wednesday met Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu in New Delhi and demanded an inquiry into the lapses by the railway administration that allegedly led to inconvenience to the people.

On Monday, the Western Railway (WR) saw 80 services being cancelled when the power fluctuated and officials could not use the back-up batteries to power the line, as 18 of them were stolen. “The fact of the matter is that even if there is a small little step that the railway official might not have taken for pre-monsoon preparedness, the cascading effect on the railways is extreme,” said Mr Shelar.

A day after the major upheaval on the WR, the commuters on the Central Railway (CR) saw an even more harrowing time when nearly 300 services were cancelled. “The delay was so much and the mess created on the CR was so much that a pregnant women who was on the way to the hospital gave birth in the train itself near Thane while travelling from Diva to CST,” he further added.

Talking about accountability, Mr Shelar said that officials in charge should be held responsible when there are incidents like this. “There should be an inquiry into why the railway official has been not able to do his job properly, and its unfair the commuters are suffering to such a degree even before the actual rains hit Mumbai,” said Mr Shelar.

Mr Prabhu’s twitter handle had bee flooded with tweets from Mumbaikars throughout the day with updates of what exactly was going wrong on the both the Western and Central line.
