The Arnala police of Virar area arrested a local sarpanch of Satpala village on Friday for allegedly molesting a 22-year-old woman. The accused has been identified as Anil Thakur (52), who police sources said is a distant relative of the victim.

Suhas Bavche, deputy superintendent of police, Mira Road, confirming the arrest said, “The accused was produced in court on Saturday. He was later released on bail as it was a bailable offence.”

According to sources, Thakur met the woman in the last week of February when she was returning from her typing classes, and asked her about her education and job. When she told Thakur that she was looking for a job, the accused asked her to come to his house with her bio-data and promised to provide her a job. Later on March 23 at around 11.30 am, Thakur called the woman and asked her to meet him with the bio-data. Thakur picked her up in his car and took her to a hotel situated on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad highway. In the hotel room, Thakur allegedly tied the woman and tried to molest her. He gave her a beverage but she refused to drink it, and somehow managed to escape from the hotel. When she reached her home and narrated the incident to her parents, they lodged a police complaint over the same. According to sources, the woman in her statement said Thakur had threatened her to “keep mum” about the incident.
