Making the process for alignment or realignment of existing transport corridor projects easier for Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority , the BMC has eliminated the requirement for fresh approvals from the civic body, every time realignment takes place.

Part of the Development Control Regulations (DCR) for the DP 2034 published by the BMC on Sunday envision that the DP gets modified automatically, if alignment of Metro/Mono/Elevated Corridors/Corridors of Mass Rapid Transport System, including BRTS changes after the original has been decided. This means that in case the routes of these corridors undergo change, MMRDA will not be required to approach the civic body and repeat clearance procedure as per DP rules. The DP will amend automatically in such cases.

Clarifying the civic body’s motive behind this measure, municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta said, “When the proposed design for any transport corridor is finalised, it freezes. Beyond this period, only minor changes are made to the plan alignment, if necessary, but these changes also need to undergo clearance procedures of the civic body all over again. We have cut that measure just to make it simpler.”

Mr Mehta said these alignments are minor like changing bus stop positions by a few meters, or changing a curve in the road slightly. Care will be taken in such cases to ensure that no existing structures are affected in the process.
