Alert train driver averts crash
A possible tragedy was averted on Sunday when Konkan Railway’s Mumbai-Goa Mandovi Express was derailed. The incident took place at 12.30 am. According to the railway police, the train’s driver spotted a track fracture between Diwankhavati and Khed stations and applied the brakes in time, preventing a crash. As a result, the locomotive and the first coach of the train were derailed near Khed station. All the passengers of the train no. 10103 down CST-Madgaon Mandovi Express were found to be safe. After receiving the information, track engineers and maintenance staff swung into action. “Our officers and staff from the corporate office and Ratnagiri region rushed to the spot of the derailment for expeditious restoration of the traffic. The work went on in full swing and the engineers and the staff worked on a war footing. The section was restored by late night,” said a release from Konkan Rail. “The commissioner of railway safety has also been apprised of the incident and, as desired, a senior administrative grade level inquiry into the incident has been ordered,” the release reads. On whether the driver of the train will be awarded, an official from Konkan Rail said, “Let the inquiry be finished, if we find his role to be good, then definitely we will reward him.” Some trains might run late due to the incident.
