Airport handles 3 medical emergencies in 2 days
The Mumbai airport has seen as many as three medical emergencies in the past couple of days. In the latest incident on Thursday, a 91-year-old man suffered a cardiac arrest while awaiting his flight at Mumbai airport. In another incident on Wednesday, a Spice Jet passenger suffered a cardiac arrest at the terminal building while in a third incident again on Wednesday, a Manila-Dubai flight made an emergency landing at Mumbai airport after a passenger fainted on board.
The latest incident occurred at around 9.56am on Thursday at terminal 1B. Ram Sahani (91) was travelling with his wife and they were booked on 6E 323 Mumbai-Kolkata which takes off at 11.40am. Sources said Mr Sahani suddenly fell down while waiting in the security hold area. Soon after, doctors at the airport started Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) which included 5 shocks using Automated external defribrillator (AED) and end tracheal intubations. Mr Sahani’s pulse returned and he was shifted to Nanavati Hospital in the airport’s advanced life support ambulance. He is now stable and admitted to the ICCU after undergoing a temporary pacemaker installation procedure at the hospital.
In the incident on Wednesday, the pilot of a Spice Jet flight SG 488 which took off from Kolkata at about 8am and was supposed to land in Mumbai at 11am approached Mumbai Air Traffic Control for an urgent landing with ambulance on the runway after one of the passengers Tapas Dasgupta suffered severe chest pain. Mr Dasgupta was first treated by Mumbai Airport doctors and later shifted to Nanavati.
In a third incident also on Wednesday, a Cebu Pacific flight 7944, flying from Manila to Dubai, approached Mumbai Air Traffic Control for an emergency landing. The flight was handled by Air India and sources said there were 14 crew members and 373 passengers on board. Having taken off at 4.05pm from Manila, the flight was supposed to reach Dubai by 1.51pm however mid-air, Philippines national Ms Isabel Chrisannie Gonzales (38) reported headache and collapsed immediately after. After the flight landed at Mumbai Airport, she was taken to Seven Hills Hospital where doctors admitted her to the ICU.
