Though the state Election Commission de-registered All India Majilis-e-Ittehad-Ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) as a political party on Wednesday, according to senior official from the EC, the party candidate could contest the civic elections with its official party symbol if it submits relevant documents to the commission.
An official from the Maharashtra EC said, on the condition of anonymity, that AIMIM could get back its official identity, if the party submits the necessary documents.
The commission, on Wednesday, had deregistered AIMIM along with 190 other parties as they had failed to submit their income-tax returns within the stipulated time.
“We had given several reminders to the party, but they did not respond. They can challenge our decision, but it would be a waste of time as it has been mentioned in the EC’s rules that a political party has to file income tax returns regularly,” said the official.
Meanwhile, according to the official, once the party is deregistered, it can contest the elections and propagate its name during the election
campaign. However, it will be considered as an independent candidate and it will have no right on its official party symbol.
The official said, AIMIM has to file an application to the state EC to be listed as a recognised political party in Maharashtra. The party already is recognised in Andhra Pradesh with a kite as its political symbol.
“If the party submits financial documents, the commission will consider its application and it can get recognition in our state. Even, if it demands that the party symbol be frozen, we can do it,” he said.
