In light of increasing incidence of dengue, malaria and viral fever in adults, the state has issued a circular to all Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) hospitals to take extra cognisance and provide special care for pregnant women, children and senior citizens suffering from such diseases.
While such fevers put moms-to-be at risk, senior citizens and children are also vulnerable as they have a weak immune system.
Dr Wiqar Shaikh, head of department, internal medicine at JJ Hospital said, “We are running a 24-hour emergency, our Out Patient Department is full with patients of the dengue, malaria and viral fever. There are a large number of pregnant women with suspected dengue fever.”
“Many of the patients undergoing treatment are senior citizens and children and the ward is overflowing with fever patients. As there are insufficient beds, we giving them mattresses and treating them. The primary reason (behind the increase in instances) could be the mutation of the strain, which has become stronger,” added Dr Sahikh.
BMC-run hospitals are also facing a similar situation. Dr Avinash Supe, director of major BMC hospitals, said, “We have received the circular but we are already treating the patients for these aliments. We admitted a few pregnant women last week with low platelet count and high blood pressure. Childbirth in women with dengue is a risk because of these two factors.”
Most of the state, BMC and private-run hospitals are recording a rise in hospitalisations over the past three weeks due to the spread of dengue, malaria and viral fever.
