The national carrier Air India (AI), is geared up to take steps towards fuel and energy savings, with an aim to be environment-friendly. It has launched battery-based ground handling systems across the country. Soon, a solar power plant will get built on the terrace of Air India building, sources said. The airline is also looking forward to rainwater harvesting and for the same an external audit will be conducted.

According to officials, since the year 2009, the airline had come up with a few plans towards being environment-friendly by reducing carbon emission, conserving fuel etc. To implement these plans, the airline has begun some short route flights to reduce flight fuel. Confirming this, Harpreet A.D. Singh, chief of flight safety said, “We are thinking of merging a few flights to those destinations where flight frequency is high and aircrafts fly with very few passengers.”

The airline is also working on saving fuel. “While flying, aircrafts often change their height and this leads to use of extra fuel. In order to save fuel, we have proposed a plan according to which we will fly on a direct path and use up less fuel,” she said.
