Ahead of monsoon, NDRF teams shifted to Andheri

As part of BMC’s monsoon preparedness, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams that will participate in disaster response, previously stationed at Pune and Talegaon, have been shifted to Andheri this year. In addition, a permanent base has been created for them at the Andheri Sports Complex for them to continue being able to carry out mock drills and training sessions for disaster preparedness. Three such teams are stationed in Andheri and are operational from there, with each team comprising 45 officials.

These teams would earlier travel to Mumbai either from Talegaon or Pune, delaying the response time by over two to three hours. I.A. Kundan, assistant municipal commissioner in charge of Disaster Management, said, “The first few hours are the golden hours of disaster response and these teams would spend that time travelling instead.”

Meanwhile, the BMC has made space for one battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force to be stationed at Taloja, 600 army men have been stationed at the Army’s Kalina base and nine teams of the Navy have been deployed exclusively for disaster management.

A total of 238 CCTV cameras have been made operational all across Mumbai, and they are being constantly monitored from the disaster control room at the civic head quarters at CST. A back-up control room at Parel has been set up and smaller control rooms in all 24 words have been started with a minimum of three officials on duty at any given time of the day.

The civic body has identified 270 water-logging spots in the city, of which 66 are known to cause hindrance to traffic.
