The much-awaited Pre-Admission Online Registration (PAOR) process of the University of Mumbai that started on June 14 turned out to be a damp squib after the website crashed and students were unable to complete the process. According to experts, the website could have crashed as thousands of students tried to register themselves at the same time thus leading to an overload on the server. University officials said that the service provider has been asked to increase the servers so thatstudents are not inconvenienced.
Students who tried to log on to the official website Tuesday morning were able to access the site initially but by the time they filled in the details and tried to upload the same, the website showed an error. “I tried to upload the application form throughout the day but was unable to do so till evening,” said Salil Hasan, a student from Bandra.
While admission to the various under graduate degree programmes of the university in its departments and affiliated colleges will start only after the students get a Permanent Registration Number (PRN) via the PAOR, the delay in getting the registration process going has only added to anxiety among the student community. Students seeking admission to first year undergraduate courses had to wait for 22 days after the HSC results were declared due to the delay in starting the registration process by the university.
Admitting to the problems on the website, Leeladhar Bansod, deputy registrar, (public relations) said, “There was a problem in the morning as more than 1.25 lakh students tried to log on to the website at the same time. Even though the service provider has employed 12 servers, the increased load resulted in students having trouble. The problem was addressed continuously throughout the day and an additional five servers have also been pressed into service.”
Mr Bansod further added that registration process was not time bound and students could register themselves at any time of the day or night. “As the service is available round the clock, the registration schedule will end on June 21. Students will be able to complete the formalities by then,” said Mr Bansod.
