The ongoing controversy regarding the starting of an aviation course in the University of Mumbai and the buying of an aircraft has prompted Yuva Sena chief Aditya Thackeray to raise objections over the working of the university. In the absence of a regular senate and management council, Mr Thackeray has criticised the ad hoc arrangements made by the university and also said that the students grievance cell of the university needs to report its activities on a regular basis to the education minister.
Taking to Twitter, Mr Thackeray posted a barrage of tweets that criticised the current situation in the MU and suggested some general measures that need to be taken in each university for the benefit of the student fraternity. ‘I’m glad that VC of Mumbai Uni has finally appointed atleast an ad hoc Grievance Cell. 1st one shouldn’t have been dissolved to start with,’ said one of his tweets. Singling out the absence of the senate in the MU, he tweeted, ‘The University has been in a state of further collapse as such without a Senate. Need to revive Senate for a meeting every month soon.’ He even pointed to the fact that there was an ad hoc examination controller in the university, which would lead to a lot of trouble for the thousands of students who would be appearing for their exams soon.
“I have 2 proposals- 1) Each Uni Senate to meet every month to discuss, debate, solve issues of students, teachers, non teaching staff of Uni 2) Grievance Cells of each Uni in Maharashtra to be reporting to Education Ministry each day on status of issues solved- transparent system!” he tweeted.
Referring to the decision of starting an aviation course, he wrote, “Earlier 16 elected and 7 nominated members took decisions. Now only 7 nominated members take unilateral decisions for students, teachers.. Our Senate Members have asked for more transparency and answerability to students and ministry from current Management Council of MU.”
Yuva Sena had eight of its members in various bodies of the university before their term came to an end in August 2015 after the senate, academic and management council were dissolved. Mr Thackeray also tweeted, “I will soon be meeting the Hon’ble Chancellor and Hon’ble Minister in this regard. These are issues that must be urgently looked into.”
