Yuva Sena chief Aditya Thackeray has ridiculed the government’s proposal to have a Law Common Entrance Test for admission to law colleges and questioned whether the government had prepared sufficiently for the same before implementing it.

The state government has announced that a CET will be held for the three and five year degree courses of the law faculty to ensure transparency in the admission process.

Taking to Twitter, Mr Thackeray ridiculed the Law CET on the grounds that the students did not have sufficient time to prepare for the same. Secondly pointing to the shortage of teachers in the law faculty, Mr Thackeray asked who was preparing the CET question papers and who would assess them after the tests were held. He also alleged that there was a shortage of infrastructure to conduct the CET.

While admitting to the benefits of the CET, the junior Thackeray said that students and teachers should be given a year to be trained and for preparation for the CET rather than be forced to give the CET with little or no preparation.

A former student of law, Mr Thackeray said that if the government wanted to address the issue of shortage of seats, they should have heeded his advice and increased the number of seats in law colleges or offered the course through distance education.

The Yuva Sena had voiced their protests against the blanket ban issued by the government on starting of new colleges last year. This had prompted the government to reconsider the same for law colleges but nothing came of it.

In recent years, the demand for admissions to law courses has multiplied manifold with students eager to take up the three year LLB or the five-year BLS course in the hope of getting better job prospects.
