The Mumbai police crime branch traced and arrested a Nigerian national who has been absconding for the past three years after coming out on bail. He had donned a new identity and was leading a new life in Palghar district.

Accused Ugudu Ogabonna was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and Passport Act by the Versova police station in Andheri (west) in 2008.

A chargesheet was filed against him and about two years later he was convicted in the case in 2010. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment.

Ogabonna filed a plea in the high court for bail on October 2010. The high court had granted the bail on the surety of Rs 50,000 and directed him to report to the Versova police station once every fortnight.

After receiving bail he was absconding from February 1, 2012. On January 12 this year, Justice Sadhana Jadhav from the high court had ordered to issue a non-bailable warrant against him and directed the crime branch to execute the same.

Mumbai police spokesperson, deputy commissioner of police, detection, Dhananjay Kulkarni said, “We finally traced and arrested him from Vasai in Palghar district. He was residing there with a new name of Emeka John.”
