85 bikers held for rash riding
In a special drive that started late night on Saturday, the Bandra police cracked down on 85 bikers for violating various traffic rules, including riding at high speeds during night in their jurisdiction in Bandra (west). Most of the bikers arrested were caught for performing stunts on the Bandra Reclamation stretch. According to the Bandra police, the bikers have been booked under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act for overspeeding, riding without helmets and for rash and negligent riding. In another drive, the Mumbai traffic police arrested seven bikers for rash driving under Section 279 of the Indian Penal Code. These bikers were caught on the night of Saturday-Sunday from Tardeo, Bandra, DN Nagar, Borivali amongst other areas. Earlier this year, there have been fatal accidents where bikers riding at high speeds have lost control of their bikes and rammed them into innocent persons, claiming their lives. Sensing the seriousness of the issue, the Mumbai police, who used to earlier book these offenders under the Motor Vehicles Act, has now started booking them under the stringent Indian Penal Code. Due to this the punishment of slapping a '100 fine has been replaced by imprisonment, which may go up to six months and a fine extendable to '1,000. “This drives will continue and we will chose another location next week,” said a senior official.
