On a day when Central Railway (CR) was already reeling under disruptions since morning, Western Railway (WR) too saw over 70 services cancelled during evening peak hours on Friday, after an external wire fell on the railways overhead wire of 25,000 volts.
The incident occurred between Charni Road and Grand Road when a wire suspected to be part of the cable network of one of the buildings alongside the railway line fell on the overhead wire, causing a short circuit. Consequently, nearly 100 trains were delayed as slow trains bound for Churchgate and fast trains for Virar were shut down from 5.48 pm to 6.31 pm. “We put the situation right as early as possible but trains were delayed during evening peak hours as a result,” said a WR public relations official.
Shrutika Maheashwari (25), who was heading to her home in Bandra from Churchgate said there were no trains for almost 40 minutes. “Announcements were being made but there was no certainty regarding when trains would start. I finally headed to the café opposite the station and came back in half-an-hour but there were no trains again. Finally, a train came in another 15 minutes,” she said.
WR had seen a major disruption in January this year due to power tripping coupled with theft of batteries that power the back system. As a result, many commuters were stuck in Churchgate-bound trains for over an hour.
