Seven officers from the Jogeshwari police station, including its chief, are down with suspected dengue. Reason: A puddle of rainwater and a sewage drain, located opposite to the police station could have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Officials are examining ways to ensure that the areas surrounding the police station are kept clean. The seven officials are now being treated in different hospitals.

Senior PI of Jogeshwari police station Rajendra Nikam, PSI Puja Shaha, PSI Abhijit Thorat, PSI Mangesh Gotla, police constable Mahesh Chaudhari, Mahendra Jadhav and Yogesh Garud are all down with dengue for the past one week. All are taking treatment at private hospitals situated in Kandivali and Jogeshwari.

A police official attached to the Jogeshwari police station on the condition of anonymity said, “Civic officials Tuesday evening had conducted a check and found that the puddle caused by a shed erected for protection against rainwater could have bred the dengue-causing mosquitoes.”

“Also, a big drain is located right opposite the police station. Also, nearby construction workers workers have dug big ponds to collect water.”

Another official said the civic body should take measures to keep the surroundings clean. “We have sent letters twice narrating to it but no action has been initiated to clean the area. We will soon file a complaint with senior officials. Now, in the festive season we are falling short of staff due to illness.”
