The Thane police is likely to make 600 call centre employees witnesses following the raid they carried out on Tuesday over the issue of US-call centre fraud. These call centres were raided after specific information was received by the police that they were extorting money from US-citizens posing as revenue officials of the USA.
On Tuesday in a major raid, over 70 employees of the three alleged call centres were arrested, and 600 were left on notice, these call centres are located in Mira Road, Thane. The Thane police on Thursday produced 70 accused in the Thane sessions court, after which the court has granted police custody of all the accused till October 10.
A senior officer from the Thane police’s crime branch, which is investigating the matter, said, “We are planning to make nearly 600 employees of the call centre as witnesses in the case, however, it’s a long procedure and will take some time to complete the documentation.”
Another police officer related to the case, claimed the mastermind behind the fraud are currently in the US, but they will soon get details pertaining to it.
“We have seized 851 hard disks, internet servers, laptops, all worth more than Rs 1 crore from these call centres. Their employees posed as officials from the Internal Revenue Services and blackmailed American citizens citing tax irregularities. They (used to say) they owed taxes and demanding immediate payment in order to avoid legal action, such as imprisonment,” said the officer.
