Four people, who sat on a hunger strike to protest against the Deonar dumping ground along with local corporator Mohammad Siraj Shaikh, have been admitted to the Shatabdi Hospital at Govandi on Monday. This was the third day of the strike.
Mr Shaikh, corporator from Shivaji Nagar area near Deonar, along with 11 other local residents has been sitting on a hunger strike at Rafi Nagar, 90 feet road near Deonar dump yard since Saturday.
“Despite this being the third day of strike, no civic authorities have taken note of it. Four people have been rushed to the hospital. We will continue with the strike till the time the authorities do not give it to us in writing that the Deonar dumping ground will be shifted,” said Mr Shaikh.
According to the agitators, Mohammad Hasan, Meraj Rizvi Abdul Bari and Afzal Ashrafi, who were on hunger strike, have been admitted to the hospital with complaints of low BP and other complications.
Mr Shaikh also alleged that the fire at dumping ground took the life of a 13-year-old girl Shifa Mohammed Ishak. “Shifa, who lived in Umarkhadi near the dumping ground, got infected with TB three months ago and her condition turned critical owing to the smoke emanating from dumping ground fire. She was hospitalised and later died couple of days ago,” he said.
On Monday Waris Pathan, Majli-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), MLA from the Byculla constituency, submitted a memorandum to the M-east ward officer regarding the Deonar dumping ground. “The dumping ground area has a majority of Muslims living around it and therefore the government is not taking adequate steps to shift the landfill from Deonar,” said Mr Pathan.
